Wisdom teeth represent the last permanent teeth that young adults get. Although they are the last teeth you get, some people have a lot of trouble with them, and others get some of their wisdom teeth or not at all. How would you know if you or a family member is ever going to get those third molars? Here is some information about wisdom teeth and how they function in your mouth.
What Are the Third Molars?
Wisdom teeth are actually your third set of molars. You should have four wisdom teeth in all, two in your top jaw and two in your lower jaw. Your molars are the largest teeth you have because they crush, chew, and grind the majority of your food. People get wisdom teeth as early as their mid-teens or as late as their early 20s. However, some people do not get their wisdom teeth until they are in their mid-twenties.
Does Everyone Get Wisdom Teeth?
Not everyone gets their wisdom teeth. In fact, some adults are born without wisdom teeth. Our dentist will be able to determine if you have wisdom teeth from your X-rays. In some cases, your wisdom teeth will not erupt (break the surface of your gums) because they are trapped (or impacted) in your jawbone. There are people who never get wisdom teeth at all. Scientists believe that eventually, humans will lose that third set of molars altogether.
Is It a Problem if I Do Not Get Wisdom Teeth?
Even though you may not have wisdom teeth, you will still be able to crush and chew your food. In fact, people get along just fine without their wisdom teeth, which explains why people can have their wisdom teeth removed without any issues. If you are in your twenties and your wisdom teeth have not erupted yet, maybe it is time you came in to see our dentist. Our dentist can look at your X-rays and conduct an exam of your teeth. That way, you will know for sure whether you will be getting wisdom teeth. Why not call us and make an appointment to come and visit our dentist today?
